From the Collection of the late Dr. Eugene H. Courtiss
PARÉ, Ambroise. The Workes ... Translated out of Latine and compared with the French. by Thomas Johnson. London: Thomas Cotes and R. Young, 1634. 2o. Engraved title by Thomas Cecill and 323 woodcuts in text. (Title and 3 preliminary leaves re-margined at gutter, and presumably supplied from another copy, N1 with tear crossing text repaired and fore-margin patched, slightly affecting text, some minor marginal dampstaining or light spotting, some minor marginal worming, a few ink smudges.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, corners repaired); quarter-morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Most of this edition was based on the first Latin edition of 1582 (made from the second edition of the French Oeuvres). The "Apologie and treatise," however, was translated directly from the French. This copy contains the presumed earlier state of the dedication, which reads: "Sir Edward Herbert, Knight of Bath." Norman 1640; STC 19189.
