Rokitansky published the volumes of his Handbuch in reverse order: Vol. III in 1842, Vol. II in 1844, and Vol. III in 1846. A highly influential work in pathological anatomy. Rokitansky never practised medicine, but his observations, based on over 30,000 autopsies carried out at Vienna's Pathological Institute, where he was Director, were extremely important. These included the establishment of a comprehensive and systematic method of anatomical analysis in the performance of autopsies. Garrison-Morton-Norman 2293; 3618; Norman 1845.
