Lot Essay

Cf. a similar crest illustrated by Kjersmeier (C., Centres de style de la sculpture nègre africaine, Copenhagen and Paris, 1935, Vol. 1, Pl.10) from the Bougouni district. The article by P.J. Imperato on these rare dance crests ("Sogoni koun" African Arts, February 1981, Vol.XIV, no.2) is discussed in the note following lot 36.
