Lot Essay

The Mani secret society was introduced to the Zande at the beginning of the twentieth century. The statues of wood or terracotta, are called yanda, and the small wooden female ones, nazeze. The latter are kept in pots in little huts after they have received their libations - they have to be zealously tended if they are not to take revenge on neglectful owners, with offerings made to them after successful hunts and harvests.
