Lot Essay

The figure in the present drawing is close in type to the female allegory in Cagnacci's painting of The Human Life of which several versions are extant, P.G. Pasini, Guidi Cagnacci Pittore (1601-1663), Rimini, 1986, pl. XXXVIII. There are no drawings by Cagnacci directly related to pictures, and the few that have been attributed to him have been done so purely on the basis of similar figure types. Such drawings are in the Fondation Custodia, Paris (J. Byam Shaw, The Italian Drawings of the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, 1983, no. 362, pls. 413-4), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, J. Bean, 17th Century Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1979, no. 73.
