Lot Essay

The model on the recto was used by Piazzetta in a drawing at the Gabinetto stampe e disegni at the Correr Museum, Venice (A. Mariuz, L'opera completa del Piazzetta, Milan, 1982, D36, illustrated) and in another from the Udny collection at the British Museum, G. Knox, Piazzetta, A Tercentenary Exhibition of Drawings, Prints and Books, exhib. cat, National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1983, no. 12, illustrated. George Knox lists a number of compositions all executed in the 1730s where the same boy was portrayed.
