This work is definitely one of the most significant amongst the rich group of oils on canvas or panel (approximately 200 works), of various dimensions, painted between 1940 and 1946 during Severini's sojourn in Rome, which ended in the summer of 1946 with his return to Paris. Severini's research at this time was mostly centred around the concept of "still-life" - sometimes enriched by the insertion of the masks of Italian Commedia dell'Arte, which the artist loved since 1918. Collectors responded very well to these still-lifes, immediately after their creation.
In these elegant pictures, one finds the usual objects that crowded his studio, depicted as they were variations on a musical theme: jugs, bottles, glass and ceramic vases, sometimes fish or game, transformed by an extraordinary fantasy and liberty of expression, as if the artist were freed from any intellectualistic burden.
These works have received only recently a just valuation from the critics. On the aesthetical level, their exceptional elegance of composition and colour is praised, while they are now critically seen as the source of many Neo-cubist experiments of the immediate Italian Post-war period.
