Colombo's Tube Chair, composed of four cylinders of diminishing size, articulates the designer's preoccupation with the reduction of living apparatus to its most minimal. Throughout the 1960s Colombo became increasingly ambitious about the range of different functions that could be incorporated within a single design. Eventually he came to believe that the future lay in highly condensed self-contained environments, rather than in complimentary independant objects. In the understanding that furniture should not be confined solely to one specific application, the Tube Chair was marketed as being suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and was originally supplied with a draw-string bag to facilitate transport. Additional examples of the chair could be assembled to create a variety of innovative seating options.
