Lot Essay

The four drawings were executed in Rome in the 17th Century by a Dutch follower of Poussin after Antique sculptures in the Villa Medici, Rome. Three of the drawings are copies after reliefs from the Villa Medici known through prints by Pietro Santi Bartoli published in Admiranda in 1693, pls. 11-3.The last sheet is a copy after a Muse from the Niobe group seen from two different angles. The statue was excavated in 1583 at the Vigna Tomassini in Rome and acquired by Ferdinando de'Medici for the Villa Medici.
The paper was probably made in Rome in the 17th Century and bears Cardinal Barberini Arms as watermark.
We are grateful to Ruth Rubinstein in her help in cataloguing this lot.
