An 18th Century lacquered-brass surveying theodolite,
signed on the horizontal plate Troughton, London, the telescope with draw-tube focusing, mounted with a bubble level, the axis located on twin inverted V supports, one with vernier scale to read against the vertical half-circle with scale divided 70°-0-90°, with rack and pinion adjustment, the compass with silvered scale, edge-bar needle and clamp, the horizontal plate with chamfered edge, vernier and scale on the lower plate with finely divided circle, rack and pinion adjustment, with staff mounting with sprung fine adjustment, the telescope -- 5¾in. (14.6cm.) long
