Lot Essay

The present model is based on a life-size marble known as the Cesarini Venus after its original patron, now housed in the United States Embassy in Rome (Avery, loc. cit.). Two small bronzes after the marble, which are of different sizes and exhibit minor variations of detail, are known (London, loc. cit.). The present bronze is an example of the larger of the two.
