Lot Essay

This model, which is described as 'a little silver figure leaning on a staff', is first recorded in a document of 1601 concerning four silver statuettes from the Galleria of the Uffizi, which were loaned to Antonio Susini, presumably for him to make bronze copies of them (London, loc. cit.). As has been pointed out by Charles Avery (loc. cit.), the invention is adapted from a classical prototype, although the elegance of the contrapposto is Giambologna's own.
