The case designed in the gothic taste surmounted a floral trellis-cast dome with foliate urn finial and decorated with gothic arches on cluster columns enclosing a central column of glass twists around which a procession of automaton ships on a blued stained glass octagonal base, the sides with similar glass framing two rustic painted scenes of travellers meeting beside a monument, the base with an arcade of Gothic arches backed by blued stained glass and resting on foliate scroll feet, the arched dial signed Perigal Royal Exchange London on the white enamel Roman and Arabic chapter disc with pierced steel hands, the silver mask engraved and inlaid with blue and green floral enamel, the lower spandrels with subsidiary white enamel chapter discs signed CHIME; NOT CHIME and on the right side; selection for four musical tunes, the arch painted with a countryside scene with figures in the foreground pierced out to reveal a mountainous background behind an automaton parade of various court figures, attendants and labourers, the substantial five pillar triple fusee movement with verge escapement playing music on ten bells via ten hammers, quarter striking on two bells fixed to the backplate profusely engraved with scrolling foliage with a central basket of flowers above the signature Francis Perigal Royal Exchange London
