Lot Essay

The present set of 22 knives may once have been eleven pairs of knives and forks which have subsequently been altered. They almost certainly originated in the same workshop as two other sets which have appeared on the London art market in recent years, one at Sotheby's (18 April 1996, lot 126) and a carved horn set offered in these Rooms (20 April 1988, lot 81).
