CONRAD, Joseph. The Black Mate. A Story. [Edinburgh]: Fifty Copies Printed for the Author for Private Distribution Only, 1922. 8o. Original pea green cloth, unopened.

FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 50 COPIES, one of Conrad's own copies with the 1925 sale label at inside front cover: "From the library of Joseph Conrad Sold at Messrs. Hodgsons, March 13th, 1925." Conrad had written the story "The Black Mate" in 1886 while he was still a seaman; it first appeared in The London Magazine (April 1908) and was later collected in the posthumous Tales of Hearsay (1925). This very scarce first edition of 50 copies was printed at the Dunedin Press in Edinburgh through arrangements actually made by Thomas J. Wise. Cagle A55b; Smith, p. 97. A fine copy.
