First English Edition, published a few days after the American. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper: "Robert Garnett from his friend Joseph Conrad. 1923." The recipient was the brother of Edward Garnett, who recommended the publication of Almayer's Folly, greatly encouraged Conrad's writing, and became his close friend. Smith, p. 93.
