FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY TO HIS LITERARY AGENT HAROLD OBER, inscribed by the author on a front flyleaf: "For Harold Ober without whose help this would never have been able to be fostered on the world, F. Scott Fitzgerald." This refers to the fact that Ober helped to finance the completion of Tender is the Night through advances against the anticipated serial rights sale and loans to Fitzgerald (see Bruccoli, Some Sort of Epic Grandeur: The Life of F. Scott Fitzgerald, New York, 1993, p. 421). Bruccoli A14.I.a; Connolly, The Modern Movement 79: "The break-down of a marriage...is described with flashes of genius by an expert in self-destruction...and there is a haunting account...of the predicament of 'grace under pressure' from too many parties and too much money."
