Lot Essay

The Grecian pediment and Pompeian pillars reflect the Austrian variants of the Empire fashion popularised by F.J. Bertuch and G.M. Kraus, Journal des Luxus und der Moden, which was published in Weimar in 1801. A group of closely related furniture, including side and games tables, buffets, commodes, but also chairs and settees, made for Palais Auersperg in Vienna circa 1800, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, lots 175-198.
