Lot Essay

The Alexa to whom these stills and photographs are all dedicated, is the niece of the Russian-born director Rouben Mamoulian who, having acquired a reputation as an inventive director on Broadway in the 1920s, moved to Hollywood where he became known for his innovative camera work and lighting effects, his films include: City Lights (1931), Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde (1932), Song Of Songs (1933), Queen Christina (1933) and The Mark Of Zorro (1940).
