A 10% Goods and Services tax (G.S.T) will be charg… Read more The Bruce Wall Library Lake House, Cressy, Tasmania Bruce Wall, soldier, farmer and antiquarian was born in Sydney in 1917 into an affluent family and moved with them to Launceston, Tasmania in 1920. Educated at Launceston Grammer and matriculating in 1935 he undertook a traditional agricultural apprenticeship and commenced work as a jackeroo. He successfully divided his time between his work and an interest in soldiering and enlisted in the 22nd Light Horse Regiment. With the declaration of war in 1939, Bruce transferred to the AIF and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 2/9th Armoured Regiment. Fighting in the Pacific Theatre in Matilda tanks, Bruce saw action in Borneo against the retreating Japanese army. Discharged from the AIF in 1945, Bruce was employed by the Tasmanian Department of Forestry as a surveyor. His army training proved helpful as he lead a team of ten men deep into the Tasmanian wilderness surveying large tracks of native timber for periods of up to three months. A passion for agriculture still burnt deep within Bruce and he applied for the Soldier Settlement Ballot. He was successful in 1950 and was granted the Lake House farm with its magnificient colonial house built in 1830. The government while pleased to make the grant of the farming land wanted the house demolished. Bruce took the government to task and was successful in saving the historic house, which is regarded as one of the top ten sites of colonial architecture in Australia. Located on the banks of the Macquarie and Lake Rivers, the Lake House was faithfully restored by Bruce Wall and became the home to his library of Colonial and Tasmanian books. A collector from his youth with a keen interest in the social and political history of Tasmania, Bruce has spent a lifetime frequenting mainland auctions and dealers to expand his collection. It is only due to failing eye-sight that the decision has been made to offer this wonderful library for sale with Christie's Australia. At the end of a lifetime's excitement of collecting the finest Tasmaniana, Bruce Wall is content for a new generation of collectors to enjoy his creation. Robertson & Craig's Early Houses of Northern Tasmania contains view of Lake House and its interior including the library as it was housed in its customised colonial furniture bookcases of Tasmanian cedar.
