RARE A significant work on the discovery of gold, Strzelecki asserting his claim to have been the first person to discover it in Australia. 'In 1839 I mentioned in the Bathurst District to Sir George Gipps, the then Governor-General of New South Wales, who requested me to keep the matter secret for fear of the serious consequences which, considering the condition and population of the colony, were to be apprehended'.
