FIRST EDITION OF "ONE OF THE EARLIEST, AND CERTAINLY THE FULLEST, OF WORKS THAT HAD HITHERTO BEEN PUBLISHED ON THE HUDSON BAY TERRITORY" (Hill). "Because the Company's strictly observed policy was neither to allow public access to its factors' journals nor to welcome any visitors to the bay's shores, the only first hand description published and circulated about the HBC's activities in the first half of the eighteenth century was that of an early corporate renegade: Joseph Robson..." (Peter C. Newman, Empire of the Bay, 2000, p.128). Owned by the great Antarctic explorer Cherry-Garrard, whose own polar exploits with Robert Falcon Scott have become legendary.
