Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Willem van de Watering for confirming the identity of the present portrait. He suggests a date of c. 1695-1700.

Hofstede de Groot lists four oval male portraits (C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue Raisonné, etc., V, London, 1913, nos. 340b, 342f, 343c and 344b), one of which might correspond with the present picture. Willem van de Watering points out, however, that since the present picture has been cut into an oval and subsequently enlarged, it is impossible to know whether this picture might have corresponded in measurements with one of those which Hofstede de Groot lists.
