This is arguably the most renowned of all the great old Quintas of the Douro. The vineyard was planted in the early 18th century by a Scotsman, Robert Archibald, having established vine cuttings from Burgundy called "Tinta de Franca" later to be widely cultivated in the Douro and more familiarly known as "Tinta Francisca". Roriz was bought in the 1770's by one of the oldest foreign families, the Kopke's whose company was founded in 1638.
Great vintage, renowned Quinta. Tasted once, in March 1972. Shipped and bottled by J Barrow & Sons : good colour for its age, a healthy glow; pleasant bouquet showing no decay; drying out but lively. Still slightly peppery with a good finish. Fascinating and attractive. A rare magnum. MB
