Lot Essay

Armand Jean Duplessis, Cardinal, Duc de Richelieu (1585-1642) the French prelate and statesman was born into a noble but impoverished family. In 1614 he became adviser to Marie de'Medici and regent for her son Louis XIII.

Jules Mazarin, originally Giulio Mazarini (1602-61) was an Italian-born French prelate and statesman. Through the influence of Richelieu he became cardinal. He ruled more efficiently than Richelieu and was almost as powerful.
