A late 19th Century Meissen figure group with a Cupid with broken arrow, a woman in a pink gown surrounded by a three women and two children on a rocky mound above an oval base, blue crossed swords mark, incised F14, 103 and 88, black painted mark 63. -- 12in. Lot Essay

This Meissen figure group was presented to Fonteyn by the City of Paris. According to Keith Money, Galina Samsova also got some sort of prize or gift from the City of Paris at the same time as Margot Fonteyn received this piece. Apparently the press asked Samsova and Fonteyn to pose together, holding their 'gifts' aloft. The photographer's kept saying "Closer, if you please. Closer! just a bit closer, please, Dame Margot". Finally there was a jolly little 'clink', whereupon a tiny bit of Margot's prize dropped to the floor. Shock, horror! The City was horibly po-faced, and insisted it be replaced in its entirety - at vast cost - and then a little man had to travel all the way from Paris to Amerden Bank, just to explain precisely how it must be unpacked from its box...
