Ballet Shoes
A pair of pink satin ballet shoes by Freed, London, the soles stamped with manufacturer's details and size 4, one inscribed in an unidentified hand in blue ballpoint pen Fonteyn, additionally initialled in black felt pen, probably by Fonteyn G and R possibly to denote the ballets Giselle and Raymonda, the other shoe initialled III R NVG (well worn); and a black and white photograph by Felix Fonteyn of Nureyev and Fonteyn rehearsing on stage for Act II of Giselle, Covent Garden, February, 1962 -- 8½x6½in. (21.6x16.5cm.) (2)

Lot Essay

The initials on the soles of the ballet shoes could denote a number of different roles, ie. G could represent Giselle or Gayaneh.
