Lot Essay
Guillaume Noël (1734/5-1804), worked at the Sèvres factory from 1764 to 1800, and was employed initially at Vincennes in 1755. He specialized in sprays and bouquets of flowers.
This distinctive form of jardiniere, based on the planters used for delicate trees such as orange trees in ornamental parks and gardens, was first introduced at the Sèvres factory in 1753 (see M.Brunet and T. Préaud, Sèvres, Fribourg, 1978, p.144, cat.62). The model came in three sizes, the pair offered here being of deuxième grandeur. Images of the large scale planters on which they are based feature on the marquetry occasional table attributed to Topino in this sale, lot 22.
