Lot Essay

This picture, described by Oliver Beckett as 'an excellent example of John Frederick Herring, Sr.'s later works', appears to be a preliminary version of the picture sold in these Rooms on 29 July 1977, as lot 47 (£7,000). The latter, which is signed and dated '1854-60', is of landscape format and extends the composition to the right.

After Herring moved to Meopham, near Tonbridge in Kent, in 1853, he concentrated less on racing subjects and more on scenes of farmyards and rural life.
