Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of Sir John Pratt, Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench, and sister of Charles, 1st Earl Camden. She married Thomas Barrett-Lennard, 17th Baron Dacre and had one daughter, Barbara Anne, who died in 1749. A group portrait of The Hon. Thomas and Mrs. Barrett-Lennard, later Lord and Lady Dacre, with their Daughter Barbara Anne, painted by Pompeo Batoni in 1750, is in the Barrett-Lennard Collection (see A. M. Clark, Ed. E.P. Bowron, Pompeo Batoni: A Complete Catalogue of his Works with an Introductory Text, Oxford, 1985, p. 246, illustrated pl.124).
