Lot Essay

The sitter was the youngest son of the 3rd Earl of Sunderland, K.G., and Anne, daughter and co-heir of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. He was Member of Parliament for Woodstock and Ranger of the Great Park, Windsor, and married Georgina Carolina, third daughter and co-heir of John Carteret, Earl Granville, in 1733/4. His only son, John, was created 1st Earl Spencer. Slaughter painted several works for Althorp, including two signed portraits of this sitter.
