With ovoid ball-and-claw knuckled feet and spiral reeded urn pedestal, this Massachusetts candlestand is an exeedingly rare form which combines elements found frequently on firescreens and tea tables.
While this table has elements in common with Newport tea tables, it differs in the distinctive carved feet and in the form of the urn. Newport examples are often distinguished by tiny paw feet and contrast with the knuckled claws grasping ovoids seen here. Furthermore, Newport urns tend to be more horizontal and open as opposed to this candlestand's urn support with vertical sides.
