Lot Essay

Dr. Konrad Oberhuber believes that the present sheet probably dates from Raimondi's early period when his work was strongly influenced of his master Francesco Raibolini, called Francia. This influence is particularly evident in the classical proportions and modelling of Raimondi's figures. Dr. Oberhuber compares the present sheet to a drawing in the Pierpont Morgan Library and another sold at Christie's New York, K. Oberhuber, op. cit., p. 69, pls. 18-19 and 21. The present sheet, together with the drawing sold at Christie's and most of the other known sheets by Raimondi were formerly in the collection of Captain Carlo Prayer in Milan.
