Possibly related to the head of God the Father in the small panel by Lanino in the Casa Parrochiale of Lessona, Italy, A. Quazza, 'Repertorio della opere di Bernardino Lanino, Bernardino Lanino e il cinquecento a Vercelli, Torino, 1986, p. 252. The panel was painted as the top of a large polyptych commissioned from Lanino on 24 October 1568 for Lessona's Duomo. The model indicated by the canons of the church was the picture of the Madonna della Grazie which Lanino had painted the same year for San Paolo in Vercelli.
The Lessona polyptic was taken down in 1774, the frame destroyed and the pictures separated. The main picture, The enthroned Madonna and Child with Saints Lawrence, George, John the Baptist and Eusebius, signed and dated 1571, is now inserted in the panelling of the choir of the small church of San Lorenzo also in Lessona.
Another drawing possibly related to the head of God the Father is in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin (A. Bertini, Disegni Italiani della Biblioteca reale di Torino, Rome, 1958, no. 208; also reproduced by G. Romano in Bernardino Lanino, exhib. cat., Vercelli, 1985, p. 109). The head of a youth also for that picture is reproduced by P. Astrua in Bernardino Lanino, exhib. cat., Vercelli, 1985, p. 118. Another drawing by Lanino was sold from the Cabinet Italien at Christie's New York, 28 January 1999, lot 1.
