Lot Essay

This attribution was confirmed in a letter from Dr. Hinrich Sieveking dated 5 May 1999. The present sheet shows a view near Olevano in the Roman Campagna, with the Volsci mountains in the distance. Another drawing of this view dated 1824, taken from a slightly different angle, is in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (G. Winkler, Heinrich Reinhold (1788-1825), Italienische Landschaften, Zeichnungen, Aquarelle, Olskissen, Gemälde, exhib. cat., Gera, 1988, no. 161). That view re-appears in a Landscape with Hagar and Ishmael dated 1823 in the Thorvaldsen Museum, Copenhagen, G. Winkler, op. cit., no. 190.
We are grateful for Dr. Sieveking for his help in preparing this note.
