Circa 1745
The large, footed helmet-shaped jug of European silver form and enamelled after Meissen Kakiemon style porcelain, the exterior showing a tiger and a pair of quail amongst colorful rocks and blossoming boughs in a Kakiemon palette, the interior with Meissen Chinoserie style iron-red and gilt serpents flanking a phoenix whose tail circles up to its breast

Decoration combining various Asian styles was fashionable at the Meissen factory in the decades before 1750, when it dominated European porcelain. See O. Walcha, Meiszner Porzellan, no. 34 for a piece that mixes the iron-red dragon motifs with the Kakiemon painting as this ewer does
