A RARE FAMILLE ROSE BUDDHA TUREEN STAND
Circa 1775
Painted in the center with the smiling Buddha seated cross-legged with one knee raised, wearing colorful robes over iron-red and gilt trousers and holding a turquoise bag of wind at his side, an iron-red and gilt spearhead inner border and the molded and shaped rim decorated with leafy clumps of purple and pink roses entwined with smaller sprigs

Lot Essay

One of only several such stands known that were made for massive Buddha soup tureens, one of which can be seen at the Winterthur Museum, Delaware (with unmatched stand). These rare forms were among the crowning achievements of Chinese export potters and must have made quite a statement in a grand 18th century dining room
