An extensive landscape with travellers on a path overlooking a valley, a city beyond

The present lot is based on a composition by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) known in several versions (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, Cologne, 1979, pp. 143-4). They include the signed and dated painting of 1590 (sale, Sotheby's, London, 10 December 1986, lot 57); the 1595 work offered at Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 14 April 1989, lot 241; and that in the Künsthistorische Museum, Vienna of 1603.
