Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden

Three other versions of the present unrecorded composition are known today, each with notable differences. The present work most closely relates to the Paradise Landscape in the Prado, Madrid, Inv. no. 1010. The Prado composition, which is of slightly smaller dimensions (59 x 41cm.), does not have the pair of Guinea-pigs in the foreground nor does it have the prominent figures of Adam and Eve in the center of the landscape. These two figures are possibly by Jan Baptista Caimo (1590-1658), a member of the Antwerp guild from 1609. Other versions of The Garden of Eden, are in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Inv. no. 742, and with Galerie Mullenmeister, Solingen, 1983. Ertz dates all these works to around 1620, prior to the artist's journey to Italy (K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Jungere, Freren, 1984, pp. 270-273, nos. 87-89).

The reverse of the panel is stamped with the brand of the Antwerp Guild of Panelmakers and the mark of Guilliam Gabron.
