Lot Essay

John Gee was active as a chairmaker and turner from 1779 until circa 1824. He was sworn in with his partner Thomas Ayliffe in 1787. This settee caned back, oval back splats and grisaille putti are exemplary of John Gee's work. Two closely related quadruple-chairback settees stamped by Gee were sold Christie's London, the first from the collection of the late Dowager Lady Camoy's, The Dower House, Stonor, 14 April 1988, lot 71, the second, 23 April 1998, lot 27.
