POGGIO ANTICO
Located in the heart of the Brunello growing area Paola Gloder's Poggio Antico is producing impressive wine. One of the more remarkable facts is that Poggio Antico was only started in 1984, when Paola's parents purchased the 500 acre estate, fifty of which were dedicated to vines. The fifty acres of vineyard are on elevated land of 1,475 feet in elevation. With vines resting in marl, which is free of organic material and at this height, ripening could theoretically be difficult. However, in this case, the wines speak for themselves. Under the joint care of Massimo Albanese and Paola, the wines have excellent levels of extract, balanced by the requisite levels of acidity and alcohol. Things have indeed come a long way in sixteen years! The wines are a tremendous expression of the terroir which Paola is fortunate to have at her disposal. Recently she has planted further vineyards and should have a total of 75 acres by 2002. This is excellent news for devotees as the current production of the winery is a mere 6,500 cases.
