CIACCI PICCOLOMINI D'ARAGONA
Located in the Eocene area of the Montalcino production zone, Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona produces of the more intriguing Brunellos produced today. The winery was purchased from the family of Pope Pius I who has the auspicious distinction of having resigned the papacy after only twenty-eight days - the shortest ever reign as Pope. Today the proprietor Giuseppe Bianchini has no plans of abdicating his winery, as he seems to be doing all the right things. The vines are planted in clay and gravel soil, facing Southeast; the exposure is tremendous as the vines warm gently throughout the morning, and likewise cool slowly in the evening. Employing only organic fertilizers, Bianchini clearly understands the particular characteristics of the terroir in which his vines are planted. One of the methods he employs to accentuate these attributes is fermenting at fairly high temperatures, with the goal of initiating early malolactic fermentation. The 1990 is a beautifully structured and balanced wine displaying incredible depth and regional character.
