CASTELL'IN VILLA
With vines planted at an average altitude of 1410 feet, Coralia Ghertsos Pignatelli della Leonessa has been producing Chianti Classico since 1971. With the 1975 vintage she began using 100 Sangiovese in her Chianti, forgoing the other grapes required at the time. The wines are fairly full-bodied for Chianti and show amazing structure. This consignment shows tremendous historical perspective and this bears some note. Chianti saw early flowering and had rain at all the right times in 1971. The result is a wine of impressive concentration and texture with well integrated tannins. The output of 1975 was six percent below what was normal in the 1970's, hence the wines have deeper than normal colour, good extract and fairly high, though nicely integrated, acidity, which continue to drink well and still show great promise. Although 1982 saw hail in the spring and autumn, yields were surprisingly high, the wines were a bit hard and tannic in their youth, but have evolved into elegant wines with tremendous structure. A rather dismal winter and spring gave way to a long, hot, dry summer; the grapes were harvested early and possessed remarkably high levels of sugar, although the vintage yielded precious little. The wines show deep colour, medium acidity and high alcohol. Warm and dry weather persisted throughout 1990, giving wines of equal quality as 1985, although they show even deeper colour.
