MARCHESI DI BAROLO
Possessing nearly 100 acres of vineyard in the Langhe, Marchesi di Barolo produces wines from some of the best sites in Barolo. Under the ownership of the Falletti family - who were actually bestowed the title "Marchesi di Barolo" in the 12th century - they bottled their first wines in the style which we today call Barolo. The Falletti family held the winery until 1961 when the Marchesa Giulia Falletti died leaving no heirs. Giulia's contribution to the winery and wine production in the Langhe as a whole was actually quite important, as she instituted new wine techniques both in the vineyard and in the cellar. These techniques resulted in the dry style of Barolo which we enjoy today. Zachys/Christie's is proud to be able to offer Barolo from the 1958 vintage; the great historian of the Langhe Renato Rati noted that the wines were full-bodied and rich, showing excellent harmony. As very few remain today, this is a unique opportunity to obtain wines from this outstanding vintage.
