SAN GIUSTO A RENTENNANO
The San Giusto estate, home to a one time ninth-century military fortress, is presently owned by the Martini di Cigala family, and is located on the Siena side of the Chianti appellation in the Gaiole zone. Soil is thin and the hillsides steep, ultimately leading to Chianti Classico that exhibits the power of Brunello along with elegant austerity, firm structure, and a lingering, intense palate. Attention to quality is so stringent that in poor vintages, part of the entire production is sold off in bulk. The cult wine "Percarlo" is a 100 Sangiovese barrique-aged wine produced in tiny quantities.
Robert Parker Jr., describes the 1985 Percarlo as "one of the most sumptuous Tuscany offerings I have ever tasted, with years of life still left." The San Giusto wines are perennial stars with other wine critics as well, garnering only the highest accolades; their very scarcity only serve to make them more sought-after.
Not an afterthought : the San Giusto dessert wine is considered to be the benchmark Vin Santo; it is primarily composed of the superior varietal Malvasia, with very little Trebbiano.
