FORRESTAL, James, Secretary of Navy. Two partly printed documents signed ("James Forrestall"), Washington, D.C., 13 March 1941 and 15 November 1945. each 1 page, 4to. On behalf of the President Forrestal appoints John A. Roosevelt an Ensign, and, in the second issues a discharge following "active duty in the United States Navy during World War II." With two United States Navy Swords: (I) Gilt-brass, Model 1852. Naval officer's sword presented to John A. Roosevelt and engraved as such with sword knot and gilt-metal and leather scabbard. (II) Naval officer's dress sword nickel plated. Hilt and scabbard marked U.S. and engraved with an American Eagle with walnut grip which belonged to John A. Roosevelt.
John A. Roosevelt joined the Navy as an Ensign and was discharged a Lt. Commander. He served on the Wasp and the Hornet and received the Bronze Star.
