Omai enjoyed a season of celebrity in England embodying for many, as he was supposed to, Rousseau's concept of the noble savage. He was introduced to the finest of society. In 1776, he was returned to Tahiti laden with gifts as useful to him there as were his erstwhile European social contacts. He persihed within six months under unclear circumstances, not an uncommon fate for many of the islanders who made the pilgrimage to England. This portrait is one of the first large-scale and separately issued images produced to satisfy European curiosities.
