Lot Essay

A child of Jonathan and Hannah (Bourdette) dixon, Edward Henry Dixon, whose portrait is illustrated here, probably grew up in New Jersey or its vicinity. His mother, Hannah Bourdette Dixon, was the daughter of Peter Bourdette (d.1824) a farmer from Hackensack, New Jersey, whose will indicates that Edward's father, Jonathan, was dead before 1824. Jonathan Dixon was a ship chandler, and as Edward's costume suggests, must have met with some degree of euccess in his career.

Edward Henry Dixon subsequently became a doctor, and married Sarah Stuart Hart (1815-1883)
