Probably French, late 16th/early 17th Century
Banded overall, the domed hinged top enclosing a plain interior, the front with two locks, the sides with carrying handles
56cm. high x 122cm. wide x 45cm. deep

Comparable chests can be seen in the painting entitled The confiscation of the contents of a painter's studio by François Bunel II (1550 - 1593?), now in the Mauritshuis, see T. Albrecht, Truhen.Kisten.Laden, Petersberg, 1997, pp. 15, Abb. 6.
François Bunel II was painter to Henri IV of Bourbon, later to become the King of France. This painting can be dated to circa 1590.
