Edward the Confessor, Penny, Trefoil-Quadrilateral type (BEH C), York, Aelfhere, obv. EDR - PDEX, rev. TAFERE ON ROCCE altered from ÆLFHERE ON EOF [-], 14.2 grains, 0.92g (see SCBI Berlin 849 for a similar piece), very fine and interesting, the dies not traced

Lot Essay

The piece has the appearance of being cast, the edge is filed with raised rims similar to the Berlin illustration and the obverse legend is most unusual. Curiously, a similar coin from different dies has the mint signature altered to read ÆLFHERE ON DOFE (SCBI Glasgow 1014).
